Types of powder
• Metal powder: such as iron powder, copper powder, aluminum powder, etc., are the most commonly used powders in powder metallurgy. Iron-based powder is widely used in the manufacture of mechanical parts due to its low cost and high strength; copper-based powder has good electrical and thermal conductivity, and is often used in the fields of electronics and electrical appliances.
• Alloy powder: composed of two or more metal elements, such as stainless steel powder and nickel-based alloy powder. Stainless steel powder is corrosion-resistant and suitable for the manufacture of corrosion-resistant parts; nickel-based alloy powder has good high-temperature performance and is often used in aerospace and other high-temperature fields.
• Non-metallic powder: including ceramic powder, graphite powder, etc. Ceramic powder has high hardness, high temperature resistance and wear resistance, and can be used to manufacture tools, molds, etc. Graphite powder has good lubricity and conductivity, and is often used in powder metallurgy lubricants and electrode materials.
Characteristics of powder
• Particle size: The size of powder particles has an important impact on the fluidity, loosening density and pressing performance of the powder. Fine powder has a large specific surface area and a large contact area when pressing, which can improve the density of the pressing billet, but the fluidity is poor; coarse powder has good fluidity, but the density of the billet is low.
